Nothing Political:Monday, June 07, 2004

I've had enough of political ranting for the moment. I've decided to go back to my #1 love, music and talk about a band, which is one of my favorites - The Jesus Lizard.

The Jesus Lizard are and Alternative Rock band, who consisted of David Yow, Duane Denison, David Sims and Mac Macneilly (as well as various other drummers and machines).

It took me a while to get into this band, which in my experience, is often a good thing. The first few tracks I'd heard of theirs were ok. Probably the first thing I heard from them was 'Puss' which I saw the video of on TV. I then borrowed a tape of their LP Down from a mate of mine, gave it a listen and thought "It's ok, but it's not heavy enough and the vocals sure do suck". Given that I was into some pretty heavy stuff at that point of my life (Napalm Death, Ministry etc.), I didn't listen again for sometime.

Later on, I went to the Big Day Out, and the Jesus Lizard happened to be playing. They came on pretty early on in the line-up, sometime around 1-2pm from memory, and I was blown away by their performance. David Yow was jumping into the audience, Duane and David were blowing me away with their skills on the Guitar and Bass (Mac was doing a great job too!). After that I decided to give Down another try, and this time, I got it and really started to enjoy The Jesus Lizard.

About a year later, the Lizard were back in town, this time for a concert of their own in a pub in Adelaide called the Tivoli. All of my friend had decided that they either couldn't afford to go, or had exams, or some other reason, and I was thinking of not going along. Luckily I ichanged my mind and went by myself. It turned out to be one of the best live shows I've seen. The energy the guys were giving was awesome, David Yow stripped and jumped into the crowd. It goes down as one of the top 5 live shows I've ever seen.

I never got to see The Jesus Lizard again, the last time they were due to play in Adelaide, the show was cancelled due to bad weather (it was an outdoor gig, which unfortunately was on the wettest weekend in Adelaide in years!), and the band broke up soon after that.

If you haven't ever listened to the Jesus Lizard and want to give them a go, then make sure you do. It's worth it. I'd recommend starting with either "Liar" or "Shot" and then going from their. Also make sure you check out Tomahawk, which is Duane's new band with Mike Patton, John Stanier and some other dude from the Melvins, who's name I don't recall.
